Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offering his condolences and an update on the deadly Ukrainian plane crash that killed at least 63 Canadians.
As the investigation begins, the Prime Minister says the country is saddened and that Canadian Foreign Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne will be speaking with the Iranian foreign minister to confirm the need for a thorough investigation into the fatal crash.
The Prime Minister says friends and relatives of Canadians believed to be on board should contact Global Affairs Canada 24/7 emergency watch and response centre.
On Wednesday afternoon a Ukrainian Airlines plane landed in Toronto from Kiev, and the airline says 138 passengers were not on that flight as they had died in the earlier leg of their journey. Trudeau says a number of steps are being taken to support the families at Pearson airport.
Students attending schools in Toronto, York Region and Ontario universities are among the people killed in the plane crash in Iran.
The Kiev-bound plane crashed minutes after takeoff at Tehran's airport on Wednesday morning.
At this time, the cause of the crash remains unknown.
