Officials with the Niagara Region are expressing concern over a plan by the province to merge local health units.
At the region's public health committee meeting yesterday, CAO Carmen D'Angelo explained the province is looking to merge 36 public health units across the province into 14 regional entities which would align with Local Health Integration Networks.
The move would make Niagara part of group that includes Haldimand–Norfolk, Brant, Hamilton and Burlington.
D'Angelo telling the committee he fears the proposal would hurt the local focus of public health.
The committee has referred the issue to regional council before deciding how to proceed.
The province is accepting comments on the plan until the end of the month.
