Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horvath says the timing of the province's decision to close the Hamilton forensic lab is very suspicious.
The pathology unit conducts death investigations for Hamilton as well as Niagara, Haldimand, Norfolk, Brant and Dufferin.
The Spec reporting the province's decision to close the unit came after the former head of the Hamilton lab lodged a complaint against Ontario's chief pathologist as well as its chief coroner in March.
Officials with the Ministry of the Solicitor General claim the decision was made months before the complaint was filed.
The decision will see sudden death investigations moved to a Toronto lab.
Critics say that will have an impact on police, funeral homes and families who will have to travel to Toronto to see or pick up a body.
