The families of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy are speaking about their pain as convicted rapist and killer Paul Bernardo pleads for his release from prison today.
The 54-year-old is appearing at a parole hearing this morning saying that he has improved himself during his 25 years behind bars.
His defence lawyer has said his client plans to take full responsibility for his crimes and express remorse.
Bernardo was convicted in 1995 of the sadistic murders of two teenaged girls and numerous rapes.
He was given life without parole eligibility until he had served 25 years since his arrest in early 1993.
The hearing started at 10am at Millhaven Institution in Bath, ON.
Debbie Mahaffy and Donna French, the mothers of Bernardo's victims are reading victim impact statements at the hearing today.
Leslie's mother Debbie says preparing for the hearing has been gut wrenching.
She says reliving Leslie's pain and horror feels like the murder and torture happened yesterday.
She says it's a nightmare and hell to speak about what her daughter suffered 27 years ago and it tears her family apart.
Debbie talks about the injustice that Bernardo is up for parole in 25 years, when he should have been given 50 years in jail without the chance of parole for both girl's murders.
She says she didn't want to appear at the hearing, but she fears Leslie's life and death will be forgotten.
Donna French wants people to know that time doesn't heal, and her family has tried to live with the loss of Kristen for the past 26 years.
French talks about the pain she feels when seeing children walk to school.
She says all the good Kristen brought to the world cannot be erased by Bernardo's evil.
She quoted an FBI profiler, Chuck Wagner who says "the best judge of future behaviour is past behaviour".
Both mothers point out that Bernardo has not shown any remorse and his actions in jail, such as writing a violent novel, shows he has not changed and should be kept in jail for the rest of his life.
