Earlier today the Niagara Region's Public Works committee passed a motion to develop a business case to study the feasibility of operating red-light cameras in the region.
The case for the cameras will be presented as part of a Road Safety plan that will be presented to council at the end of 2019.
The cameras work by taking a picture of vehicles that approach a red light at or above a set speed.
If the image shows a violation, an infraction notice is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.
Approximately 20% of reportable collisions on Niagara Regional roads in 2016 and 2017 were angle collisions.
In total, there were 947 collisions at Niagara intersections from 2008 to 2017.
