This month is the time to weigh in on the future of garbage pick up in Niagara.
The region is holding a series of public meetings and an online survey as it considers changes to our trash and recycling pick up.
Among the changes under consideration, picking up garbage every two weeks instead of every week, while doubling bags allowed to be placed at the curb, requiring garbage to be placed in clear bags only and eliminating the large appliance curbside collection.
Speaking to CKTB's Niagara in the Morning, Catherine Habermebl Director of Waste Management Services at the Region, was surprised to learn that the online survey can be taken multiple times by the same person and says she'll be looking into that. She adds the online survey is just one aspect of how they are gathering information from the public.
A telephone survey is also being conducted along with the public meetings.
Regional officials say they hope to find ways to encourage more residents to use green bins and to find ways to reduce waste.
The contract for current service provider Emterra doesn't expire until 2021.
Habermebl also addressed ongoing service issues with the current contractor.
She says senior staff are continuing to work with Emterra to find solutions to the service delays that have plagued the region for the past year.
