Niagara Regional Council has approved funding to build a memorial honouring workers killed during the construction of the Welland Canal.
$234,000 from the region's waterfront investment program, will go toward the building of the memorial near Lock 3 at the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canal Centre.
The memorial will honour the 137 men who died during the construction of the present day canal.
It will be located in a park that will also feature interactive learning about the history of the canal.
The project carries a $1.2 million pricetag and the remainder of the money will come through grants, contributions from local municipalities, and the private sector.
