Another twist in the NPCA story this week following the news that eight workers were laid off from the Authority this week.
Vice-Chair of the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority James Kaspersetz joining CKTB to announce that the Niagara Region has decided to take back some of the programs that the NPCA was conducting on their behalf.
The programs were being paid by the Region.
Kaspersetz says it is a great opportunity for some of the terminated staff to join the Region and continue their good work.
He was unclear just how many programs the Region is taking back.
He said the Region is taking back the role held by their events co-ordinator which is one of the jobs eliminated this week.
The 7 other positions eliminated were three in restoration, two planner, two ecological technicians.
Earlier this week, Welland MPP Cindy Forster told the legislature these people are the ones who review development proposals.
They manage the watershed program and they issue the permits around development and around building.
Kaspersetz called their positions "secondary services".
In a release yesterday, CAO Mark Brickell says the moves were made to promote wiser financial stewardship, improve customer service and will result in better communications.
Brickell says next month the NPCA will make a major announcement that he says will leave no room for doubt as to the organizations dedication to conservation.
