The region's Public Works committee has approved the hiring of someone to manage the GO Transit file.
The project manager will be responsible for coordinating efforts with Metrolinx to bring full time GO train service into Niagara.
Last summer, the province committed to bringing regular GO rail service to Grimsby by 2021 and Niagara Falls by 2023.
Regional Chair Alan Caslin told the committee yesterday he has requested the Niagara Falls date be moved up by two years in time for the Canada Summer Games.
The project manager position must still be approved by regional council.
