We could be seeing barriers go up at the Burgoyne Bridge in St. Catharines.
Dr. Mustafa Hirji, Acting Medical Officer of Health for the Region says staff is already working on a plan to install barriers.
This follows multiple suicides and suicide attempts occuring over the last month on the new bridge.
Hirji says the process will take time, as it's not just a matter of slapping up some netting.
Consultations are being done with Parsons, the firm that designed the bridge, to create a timeline, cost, and implementation process.
It's expected the project could cost between 2-5 million dollars.
The new regional council will be given a staff report on the matter before they make any decision on the project.
According to Hirji, the Burgoyne Bridge is not historically a place where people go to commit suicide.
They had to look at the region as a whole and determine where the barriers would be most affective.
Hirji says have data that suggests barriers do decrease the amount of suicide attempts made.
