The golden parachute handed to the Niagara Region's CAO in a contract update has been deemed null and void by the new regional council.
Speaking to Niagara in the Morning, Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop says the original contract of CAO Carmen D'Angelo approved by council in October of 2016 is valid, but he says a letter crafted by former Regional Chair Alan Caslin to extend his contract is null and void.
The extension letter proved controversial in the public domain as it was said to offer D'Angelo three years' pay even if he was fired with cause.
Under the terms of D'Angelo's original contract, he is paid $230,000 annual plus benefits, a $800/month car allowance and six weeks vacation.
That deal is set to expire in October of 2019 but has an optional two-year extension that needs the approval of regional council.
D'Angelo's hiring and contract extension are now the subject of an ongoing Ombudsman's probe.
