Passionate residents opposed to plans to fill part of the Port Colborne Quarry with construction material protested at council last night.
The group, 'Niagara Water Protection Alliance' voiced their concerns about Rankin Construction's plans to fill a portion of the Quarry on Highway 140.
The construction company owns the quarries.
Lorie Tokola from the Alliance tells CKTB's Tim Denis if you dump fill of any sort into the pit, you are directly dumping it into our drinking water.
She says the issue has united the south end of the region instead of tearing them apart.
Tokola says most people agree that the ground water needs to be protected.
In an interview last April, the owner of Port Colborne Quarries told us that people are being emotional not logical.
Tom Rankin, the owner of Rankin Construction which owns the quarries, says local residents should not be worried about a proposed plan for one of the quarry's.
Rankin defends the plan saying he wants to put clean fill in the quarry, and the soil that will be dumped in the quarry will be tested for any contamination.
He says recent concerns have been stirred up by residents who live near the quarry who also sit on council.
