It may be a packed Niagara Falls council chambers tonight, as councillors consider making changes to the city's official plan in order to accommodate a large development.
GR Investments, the company behind the controversial Thundering Waters development, has asked for an amendment to the plan in order to develop the Riverfront Community, which will accommodate more than 26 hundred people, 879 homes, 238 seniors units, and 500 hotel rooms.
GR says the development will create between 18 hundred and 28 hundred jobs.
On top of environmental concerns regarding wetlands on the site that borders the Welland River, council has also received a letter from Karl Dockstader with the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre reminding councillors of the concerns expressed by the Haudenosaunee two years ago, the project will interfere, impair and infringe upon their title rights and interests as guaranteed in the Nanfan Treaty of 1701.
City staff are recommending if council agrees to the changes to the official plan, the developer must hire personnel to monitor construction on behalf of any First Nation at their own expense.
