A team of scientists from around the world have released the first image of a black hole.
The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration released the picture this morning as part of their mission to prove the existence of regions in space where the pull of gravity is so strong, even light can't escape.
The image stems from the centre of the galaxy M87, showing a bright ring formed as light bends under the intense force of gravity around a black hole that is 6.5 billion times more massive than our Sun.
Astrophysicist Avery Broderick from the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo was part of the team that compiled the image from eight telescopes located in Mexico, Spain, the South Pole, Arizona, and two telescopes in both Chile and Hawaii.
