In case this was causing you no end of stress, one of the scientists who studied how long COVID-19 can live on surfaces, says you don't have to wipe down your groceries.
Jamie Lloyd-Smith tells NBC News, he doesn't wipe down his own groceries, he just makes sure he washes his hands really well after he puts them away.
Smith's research found the virus can live on cardboard for up to 24 hours and metal and plastic for 2-3 days.
He adds because the odds of someone coming along and depositing enough virus on a grocery item or takeout container are pretty low, he "views it as sort of a hypothetical risk."
If a person is at high risk from the virus, such as elderly or immunocompromised, he says they should let any groceries that don't need refrigeration sit out for a day or more before unpacking them."
