A Niagara West-Glanbrook MPP and employees from two retirement homes are warning of troubles at long-term care facilities and retirement homes.
According to the Christian Labour Association of Canada two Revera-owned retirement homes in the region are slashing work hours at Maplecrest Village in Grimsby and Garrison Place in Fort Erie.
Members of Niagara Health and Service Workers Union, CLAC Local 302 say they are being reduced to part time status and losing benefits.
Via a release CLAC representative Michael Reid says these cuts will have a huge impact on residents who rely on staff for medical needs and basic aspects of daily life.
Reid goes on to say Revera has made no effort to consider the input or advice of workers since the cutback was announced, and no explanation has been given as to how residents will receive adequate care.
Union members plan to host an information picket at Maplecrest Village on Saturday from afternoon from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
Meanwhile Niagara West-Glanbrook MPP Sam Oosterhoff stood in the Legislature to question Minister of Health & Long-Term Care Eric Hoskins on Revera's plan to move 50 beds out of Kilean Lodge in Grimsby.
Oosterhoff says those 50 beds will end up in Hamilton - a journey many families will not be able to make.
Oosterhoff then said there are thousands waiting for long-term care in the Niagara region, while less than 100 beds become available each month.
"My constituents are rightly concerned that long-term care capacity is being removed from the Niagara Region," Oosterhoff said. "Beds are being taken away with no plan to replace them."
