There's a healthy dose of Canuck among this year's Oscar nominees.

There's Ryan Gosling of London, Ontario, who's nominated for best actor for playing a jazz pianist in the musical ``La La Land.''

It's his second such Oscar nomination after 2006's ``Half Nelson.''

Quebec director Denis  Villeneuve is nominated for the alien-invasion drama ``Arrival.''

Several other Montrealers are also up technical Oscars for their work on the film.

Meanwhile, three of the five titles nominated in the best animated short category have Canadian ties.

They are ``Blind Vaysha,'' ``Pear Cider and Cigarettes'' and ``Piper.''

And Winnipeg-born producer Howard Barish has his first Oscar nomination for the documentary ``13th.''
