Don't be surprised to hear ships horns around noon today.
Marine workers will be blaring the horns to mark the Day of the Seafarer and to call on the government to step up COVID-19 vaccinations for crews aboard ships.
Throughout the pandemic, ships have been used to deliver essential PPE and medicines across Canada, as well as transporting goods to keep the economy moving.
But many seafarers say they are having difficulty accessing vaccination clinics.
International seafarers may not be eligible for vaccines in some Canadian ports, while even Canadians working aboard ships have a hard time getting to the clinics as a number of crew members are required to stay on board at all times.
In some American ports, nurses have boarded ships or set up port vaccination clinics to help with the effort.
Organizations representing marine workers in Canada are urging the government here to do the same and ensure international crew members can also get vaccinated at ports.
