As Niagara continues to undergo a governance review that includes the possibly of amalgamating the region's 12 municipalities, one expert is weighing in.
Political Science Professor at Western University, Andrew Sancton -- who is the author of "Merger Mania" tells CKTB amalgamation isn't always a good way to save money.
He says there is a lot of evidence that there is no cost saving at all, and in fact is some cases there has been an increase.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford says Niagara has too many politicians, but wouldn't say if he thinks amalgamation is the answer.
He deferred the question to the two experts conducting the review.
We should know the results of the review in the next few months.
The review includes all eight regional municipalities including Niagara, Halton, York, Durham, Waterloo, Peel, Muskoka District, Oxford County, and the County of Simcoe.
A total of 82 municipalities will be examined, and the province hasn't ruled out the possibility that some could be amalgamated in the future.
The PCs say the review will focus on three areas: governance, decision-making and service delivery.
