Should school buses have cameras to catch drivers who ignore their stop signs and blow past?
Executive Director with Niagara Student Transportation Services Lori Powell tells CKTB she is aware of the "We need to stop!" campaign which is aimed at targeting school bus stop-arm violations.
The campaign was launched by Adam Ranger's family.
The 5 year old boy died on February 11, 2000 after being hit by a driver who failed to stop for a school bus in Mattawa.
His family is asking people to visit their Facebook page to find information and to contact their local and provincial governments to push for camera enforcement.
Powell says while Niagara was not part of a camera pilot project she was able to watch some of the 'frightening' footage from other areas.
She says right now they are waiting for legislation to pass for camera footage to be admissible in court.
Powell says they are seeing more drivers ignore school bus stop signs, and while using cameras is not on the table just yet that doesn't mean they shouldn't push forward to call for the legislation.
She says having cameras on buses would be one tool in their kit to use to keep students safe once laws are in place.
