Dan Singer celebrated his 19th birthday Saturday scoring a hat-trick, as the IceDogs grabbed a big point in Sarnia in a 5-4 overtime loss. The CHL fourth ranked Sting will be happy not to see the ‘Dogs again this year as Billy Burke’s team took three points in their two matchups.
The Sting scored the lone goal of the opening period and added a pair in the middle frame. The IceDogs were unable to bury any of their chances in a game where the shots were even to that point at 19 apiece.
Once again, as in their first contest, the third belonged to the ‘Dogs. Johnny Corneil notched his 16th, 59 seconds into the frame on assists from Drew Hunter and Sam Miletic. The power-play struck twice, against Sarnia’s number one ranked penalty killing unit, both times by Singer. His 23rd came at 4:09 from Miletic and Akil Thomas, while the game’s tying goal with 4:23 to go had assists credited to Ben Jones and Kirill Maksimov. Sarnia would regain the lead with under three minutes left but again, the IceDogs had answer. With Stephen Dhillon on the bench and 6 attackers on the ice, John Schaefer took a feed from Thomas and got a right point shots through and Singer did the rest putting the rebound home with 34 seconds left. The IceDogs matched their two period total with 19 third period shots. The Sting reply was 11 in Dhillon’s direction.
In the overtime, the breaks went the way of the home team. Dhillon had to defend a penalty shot 1:11 into the extra time and the Sting were awarded a power-play with one minute left. After a couple of great stops against the league best power-play unit, a rebound score would end the evening. A wide open OT would see Sarnia record 7 of the 10 shots on goal.
