The Special Investigations Unit has cleared police after a suspect who evaded Niagara police several times sustained injuries during an arrest.
Between July and September of 2017, the suspect and one other person got away from police in Niagara at least four times, including one incident where they rammed through three police vehicles and two civilian cars.
After a warrant was issued for the suspect's arrest, York Regional Police caught up with him at the Toys R' Us at the Vaughan Mills Mall.
The man tried to escape in a stolen Impala, but police dragged him from the car. He continued to struggle on the ground and almost managed to get free once more before he was cuffed.
As a result of the scuffle, the man sustained fractures to his left orbital bone, nasal bones, cheekbone, and jawbone.
The director of the SIU says the amount of force used by police was required to make the arrest.
