The Special Investigations Unit is clearing Niagara Regional Police officers after a man with a large hunting knife was shot by police at the Douglas Memorial Hospital in Fort Erie.
In mid-May of last year, a 29 year old man was brought to the hospital by EMS just before 5:45 p.m. The man was reportedly experiencing mental distress, including hearing voices.
Approximately two hours later, the man entered another patient's room and stabbed him, causing medical staff and other patients to flee the area.
Police arrived on scene within minutes and encountered the man in the hallway.
Officers told the man to drop the knife, but he refused and charged at the officers.
One officer shot the man in the stomach, forcing him to drop the weapon. He was then cuffed and transported to Erie County Medical Centre in Buffalo.
