The province's Special Investigations Unit has cleared Niagara Police in an incident that saw a man suffer injuries after an officer prevented him from jumping from a Fort Erie bridge.
The SIU says on the morning of November 30, 2019, an employee of the Peace Bridge Authority contacted police with concerns that a man might jump from the Central Avenue Bridge.
Officers spoke with the 28-year-old man and after becoming satisified he was not a threat to himself watched him walk away.
Later that morning, the man was back on the bridge and police were called in for a welfare check.
When one of the officers got out of the cruiser the man ran and jumped headlong over the railing.
Despite the officer's efforts to hold onto the man, he fell down an embankment and fractured his pelvis, rib and femur.
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe that a NRPS officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s injuries.
