The Special Investigations Unit has matched the record for the highest caseload in a year.
Officials with the SIU have released an annual report, noting the police watchdog opened 382 cases.
Representatives also posted 518 news releases throughout 2018 - an increase of 86% over the previous year.
In all, the SIU Director laid criminal charges against 17 officers involved in 15 cases. Some of the investigations were launched in previous years.
The report notes the case that received the most media attention from both outlets in Ontario as well as international media organizations was the tragic Danforth shooting on July 22.
Locally, the Niagara region was involved in 17 cases, including 3 firearms related incidents.
So far two Niagara Regional Police officers are facing charges after a cop-on-cop shooting during a traffic collision investigation in Pelham near the end of November 2018.
Details about the incident are sparse, but the SIU charged Detective Shane Donovan with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
In May the OPP charged 52 year old Constable Nathan Parker, the man who was shot, with assaulting a peace officer, assault with intent to resist arrest, and assault with a weapon.
During an NRP media conference on the day Parker was charged, Police Chief Bryan MacCulloch said he asked the OPP to conduct an investigation parallel to the SIU.
MacCullough also said, "This is not over and it won't be over any time soon."
The cases are before the courts.
