The Family Day holiday in Alberta turned tragic Monday afternoon in Airdrie, where two young brothers fell through the ice on a canal in the Bayside neighbourhood.
Mounties say firefighters were able to get both boys out of the water, but the six-year-old was pronounced dead after arriving by air ambulance to Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary.
His 10-year-old brother remains in serious condition, but is expected to recover.
Police say the recent mild weather has made for unsafe conditions on small bodies of water.
Over the weekend a 68 year old Hamitlon man died after falling in the water while fishing in a pond in Waterford.
