Cannabis retail in Niagara is one step closer to reality this morning.
The Alcohol Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) gave public notice of an application by a business called the Niagara Herbalist to operate at 33 Lakeshore Road, Unit 15 in St. Catharines.
The Niagara Herbalist was one of 25 successful applicants in a lottery held in early January by the AGCO.
Niagara is considered part of West Ontario, for cannabis licensing purposes, along with such municipalities as Hamilton, London and Windsor.
West Ontario has been allocated seven possible Cannabis Retail Licences but there was no guarantee that any of the successful lottery winners would necessarily settle in Niagara.
In December, the Province announced that the initial cannabis retail stores would only be located in municipalities with a population of more than 50,000. St. Catharines City Council approved opting-in to host a cannabis retail store at their January 14th meeting.
The AGCO notice allows 15 calendar days for the public to file objections to the issuance of the Cannabis Retail Licence. In addition to the Niagara Herbalist, today’s notice identified single, cannabis retail stores in Toronto and Brampton. Successful applicants are expected to be open and operating as of April 1, 2019.
