St. Catharines city council telling staff last night to do what it can to save a $1 million deal.
Council reacting after the owners of the Niagara IceDogs issued a release yesterday saying after two years of frustration they are withdrawing their $1 million donation to the Meridian Centre.
After meeting behind closed doors, councillors saying they were not made aware of the problems that led to the team's decision.
Bill and Denise Burke say the donation was made on the condition the name of the road around the centre be named IceDogs Way in perpetuity
But when they received a draft of the agreement with the city the naming rights were only for 20 years.
The Burke's say they have been trying to get the wording changed since August 2014 and have grown increasingly frustrated dealing with city staff who would go months without responding to their inquiries.
As a result the Burkes are withdrawing the donation and have asked IceDogs Way signs be removed from the street.
Council also directing the CAO to conduct an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deal.
