St. Catharines could host a Canadian Elite Basketball League multi-week tournament.
Organizers with the league are focusing on preparing one tournament where all seven clubs would play in a single location to determine the 2020 league champion.
Officials with the Niagara River Lions say CEBL representatives are looking at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines as the potential host.
In a statement CEBL Commissioner Mike Morreale says, "I would like to acknowledge the work of the Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Lisa MacLeod, and her staff, as well as the City of St. Catharines with whom we have had positive discussions around potentially being the host site of a tournament. We are optimistic that our league will be a leader in returning pro sports to playing in Canada."
The tournament would happen in July and August and all plans must conform with the province's re-opening measures.
The league's second season was initially supposed to begin on May 7th and wrap up in Edmonton in mid-August, but the original schedule was scrapped due to COVID-19.
