First it was the under 18 Women's World Hockey Championship, and in February the Meridian Centre will host the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, now it looks like the arena may host a major basketball tournament.
Bram Cotton, the CEO of the Niagara Sports Commission, telling St. Catharines council last night, the city is on a shortlist to host the 2018 under 18 FIBA America's Championship, a major international basketball tournament.
Council voting in favour of a request by Cotton that would see the city waive the $64,000 fee to use the Meridian Centre for the tournament.
Cotton says if their bid is successful the tournament will have an economic impact of about $4 million.
Also last night, council is moving forward with plans to build a new Lakeside Park pavilion in Port Dalhousie.
After some back and forth last night, council opting to stick to the original design for the new pavilion.
Council also set a completion date of the Victoria Day weekend next.
