St. Catharines City Council has denied a resident based petition to prevent sidewalks from being installed in a new development.
Residents of Olde School Court subdivision say putting in sidewalks would limit the amount of driveway space at their new homes.
Accessibility advocate Diane Foster appeared at the meeting, reaming out council for revisiting this issue and once again stating how important sidewalks are to ensure the safety of people using mobility devices.
Following Foster’s presentation, Councillor Mat Siscoe gave an impassioned speech, scornfully asking city staff what parts of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act council could simply ignore because they are inconvenient.
The vote to deny the petition passed by a narrow vote of 7 - 6.
