St. Catharines councillors will discuss a new naming rights policy during tonight's meeting.
The issue of naming rights made headlines after the Niagara IceDogs retracted a $1 million donation last year to the Meridian Centre over a dispute with the city.
As part of the deal, IceDogs owner's Bill and Denise Burke say they agreed to donate the cash, in exchange for the naming rights to the road in front of the facility.
The Burkes say the initial terms allowed for IceDogs Way to be named in perpetuity.
However, the final agreemnt said the name change was limited to 20 years.
Mayor Walter Sendzik says the new naming rights draft policy will prevent a similiar situation from happening again.
Sendzik adding the new policy means requests to name a park for instance in honour of a local resident, go to the Heritage Committee for vetting.
He adds there is also a more robust policy for corporations who are interested in paying for the naming rights to a facility.
As for the dispute with the IceDogs, Sendzik says negotiations continue and they have been very positive.
The mayor hopes to use the new policy to resolve the outstanding issues.
