St. Catharines council will be asked to consider the possibility of a 'vacant home tax' during tonight's meeting.
Councillor Greg Miller's motion calls on council to support a regional tax on property owners with vacant homes to encourage the creation of more rental space.
According to stats from Niagara Regional Housing, some people in St. Catharines are waiting up to 13 years for affordable housing.
Miller's motion also states that if the city were to adopt the tax the revenue would be used to directly support affordable housing in St. Catharines.
Tonight's council meeting will start at 6 p.m.
