St. Catharines council has unanimously supported a motion asking the Niagara Region to look into installing safety features on bridges.
Last night, Councillor Mat Siscoe put forward the motion after two men died at the Burgoyne Bridge last month, sparking a deeper conversation on suicide prevention and support among the community.
Immediately following the deaths, signs with crisis line information were installed near the entrances to the bridge.
Siscoe says he is proud of council for taking the first steps toward suicide prevention.
While speaking to CKTB yesterday, he noted, "At the end of the day, most people understand this is really a Band-Aid. We're trying to put a Band-Aid on and give people additional time before they make a drastic decision to seek help."
