St. Catharines city councillors have agreed to ask the Ontario College of Veterinarians to make improvements to the penalties given to vets who are found guilty of cruelty to animals.
Last night's vote comes on the heels of a controversial penalty given to a local vet who was caught on videotape abusing animals in his care.
Doctor Mahavir Rekhi, the owner of the Skyway Animal Hospital, was handed a ten month suspension by the College which could be reduced if he takes some additional training.
Council unanimously agreed to ask the College to fully cooperate with an investigation by the Lincoln County Humane Society into the abuse, and to consider ways to improve and strengthen the disciplinary process for veteranians.
