Don't be alarmed if a group of St. Catharines firefighters show up on your doorstep this week.
Crews are going door-to-door to offer voluntary home safety checks as part of the Alarmed For Life program.
If asked, they can check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and answer any questions residents may have about fire safety.
If they notice a home is missing an alarm or the batteries are dead, they'll offer a replacement for a small fee.
According to recent statistics, unattended cooking and careless smoking are the top causes of house fires in the Garden City.
