A St. Catharines landlord has been fined $10,000 for fire code violations at his rental property.
The violations relate to smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms after a recent ruling by the Ontario Court of Justice.
Charles Edgar Dexter pleaded guilty last week to six Ontario Fire Code violations at the single family home he rents out at 12 Karen Ave.
Dexter pleaded guilty to three charges of not having working smoke alarms, two charges of not testing smoke alarms installed at the property as required and one count of not having a working carbon monoxide alarm as required.
The Ontario Fire Code requires working smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas at a property and working carbon monoxide alarms outside sleeping areas at properties where a fuel-burning appliance is installed.
The property required a carbon monoxide alarm but didn’t have one installed.
The property was also missing working smoke alarms on the main floor, in the basement and on the second storey.
The court fined the property owner $2,500 for the carbon monoxide violations and three of the smoke alarm violations for a total of $10,000 plus court costs and victim fine surcharges.
The court entered suspended sentences for the charges relating to testing smoke alarms as required by the Ontario Fire Code.
