A St. Catharines landlord is facing a hefty fine after failing to install working carbon monoxide alarms of every level of a home.
Soja Kazimierz pleaded guilty during an Ontario Court of Justice appearance on Friday.
The home on Myrtle Ave did have a working alarm in the basement, but the court doled out a $2,500 fine because the landlord had not installed one outside the main floor bedroom.
Carbon monoxide is odourless, tasteless, and undetectable without an alarm, giving it the nickname 'the silent killer.'
“Landlords have a responsibility under the Ontario Fire Code to protect their tenants with working carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms,” Acting Fire Chief Jeff McCormick is quoted in a statement. “Carbon monoxide alarms, and smoke alarms, have proven to save lives. And, it’s the law.”
