A total of seven beehives have been installed at Happy Rolph's Park, as St. Catharines continues to live up to it's title as a Bee City.
The hives are strategically located on the far side of the pond where there's no public access, ensuring no interference or unwanted contact.
Development Horticultural Technician with the City of St. Catharines, Ilyse Norton, says you likely won't even notice them.
Norton spoke with Larry Fedoruk on CKTB on Monday about the ecological and educational effort going on at the park.
Norton says bees "play a really important role in growing fruits and vegetables" and added that in addition to the agricultral aspect, the bees also function to support a healthy ecosystem.
This is all part of a partnership between the city of St. Catharines and Small Scale Farms.
A beekeeper that works with Small Scale Farms provided the bees.
Any honey that’s extracted will go towards Small Scale Farms' food assistance program.
St. Catharines was one of the first municipalities to be named a Bee City because of its continued work to protect pollinators.
