The Mayor of St. Catharines says they are looking are putting up more signs or implementing fines when people need to be rescued after going off-trail at Decew Falls.
Walter Sendzik says too many people are misusing the trails after three rescues were required in the last week.
"Too many people are misusing the trails and putting themselves in situations where they don't have the proper footwear - they're not true hikers so they don't know what to do when they get into a difficult situation on a trail. And what's happening now, is three times in the last week [rescues were conducted]. Those are $2,000 - $3,000 per fire trip down and it puts our firefighters in danger as well as the residents themselves when they're being lifted out. So people have to use more common sense and we're trying to get that message through. With nice weather it doesn't seem to be holding."
The most recent rescue involved EMS and the St. Catharines Fire Department saving a young man with a minor extremity injury on Friday.
Elsewhere EMS, Parks Police, Niagara Regional Police, and Niagara Falls Fire teamed up to rescue a young man stranded on the rocks in the lower the Niagara Gorge on Saturday. A firefighter was taken to hospital for assessment after using their quick release to come off rope during the rescue.
