St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik says his city is safe after a mid-day shooting that sent three to hospital.
Niagara Regional Police were called to Niagara St. and Church St. just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon.
A teenage male and two men were reportedly hit by bullets. Two of the victims were airlifted to trauma centres outside Niagara with life-threatening injuries. The other victim is being treated in a local hospital.
Police are looking for two suspects, described as black men between 19 and 23-years-old. One suspect was wearing a black hoodie and jeans.
Sendzik, commenting on CKTB's Niagara in the morning with Tim Denis, acknowledges there are unsafe areas of the city but reminds residents the victims in the shooting were targeted and adding the city is no less safe than it was yesterday.
Sendzik says he knows there are challenges in certain areas of the city, pertaining to drugs and the opioid crisis.
He adds incidents like the shooting are a symptom of those issues
Sendzik commends the work of police and first responders.
