The City of St. Catharines is moving away from having its Regional Councillors appointed to the board of the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority.
At Monday's meeting Councillor Bruce Williamson put forward a motion, unanimously approved, to direct staff to establish a process that will implement a municipally appointed citizen representative for the NPCA board of directors.
Speaking to CKTB's Tom McConnell, Mayor Walter Sendzik called it a step in the right direction.
Sendzik says a municipally appointed member is an effective way to move towards a better form of governance for the NPCA and will help restore public trust in the embattled agency.
In September, the province's Auditor General released a scathing report that found the NPCA has weak governance and significant operational issues.
Sendzik says the appointment process will get underway at the beginning of the new term of council which is set to begin December 3rd.
The selection for an appointment to NPCA will be considered at the city's Dec. 10 council meeting.
