The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre is hosting the Canadian premiere of a new documentary, Risking Everything: A Story of Niagara’s Freedom-Seekers, on February 23, in celebration of African-American freedom-seekers who made their way to Canada.
The 30-minute film was co-directed and produced by the award-winning photographer Isadore “Izzy” Bleckman and his wife, Buffalo writer, teacher and researcher Mary G. Roseberry.
The film tells the story of African-Americans who made the dangerous journey from slave states to the Niagara River before the U.S. Civil War.
The screening, which takes place Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m., is open to the general public and admission to the screening and to the St. Catharines Museum is by donation.
