It might be difficult to think about winter on a day when we're looking at a high in the mid-thirties, but the City of St. Catharines is now looking for outdoor ice rink volunteers.
Applications have opened up for the city's Community Outdoor Ice Rink Pilot Project, an initiative allowing volunteer groups to build, operate, and maintain outdoor ice rinks in city parks.
Community Park, Burgoyne Woods, Berkley Park, St. Patrick's Park, Grantham Lions Club, and Port Dalhousie Lions Club are all tapped to get a rink.
Volunteer groups do not have to be incorporated charities or not-for-profit groups to apply, but free, equal access to the rink has to be available for all community members.
Volunteers will be responsible for acquiring and storing equipment and building materials and operating and maintaining the rink.
The city will provide signage, training sessions on how to build a rink, and grants up to $500 per rink to cover watering costs.
Applications are due Friday, September 13th at 4 p.m.
The outdoor rink season runs from December 1st to March 20th.
