A St. Catharines woman is stressing out after being told she will be facing a $28,000 water bill.
Carmen Bedard’s water bill is usually around $140 every four months.
She last paid in January.
When she came home after they checked her meter this time, she had a card in her mailbox saying she needed to call the city.
They told her she had racked up a water bill of $28,000.
Bedard lives in a small house, by herself.
The city told her it must be a leak somewhere.
They advised her to check her hot water tank, bathroom, kitchen, and laundry fixtures.
She had her son-in-law look around, run water, climb into her crawl space, etc. and still they were unable to find a leak or any damage at all.
Bedard called the city back, thinking it was an issue with the meter.
She was informed that the meter had just been installed in 2016, and if she wanted the meter checked or replaced she would have to pay for it.
CKTB has reached out to the City of St. Catharines for comment.
