There were no surprises in the results of five federal byelections last night, with the Liberals retaining three seats in Montreal, Ottawa and the Toronto area, and the Conservatives handily winning the two others up for grabs in Calgary.
Liberal candidate and former P-M-O staffer Mary Ng won the Toronto-area riding of Markham-Thornhill with 51 per cent of the vote.
Political analyst Tim Powers says it was important the Trudeau Liberals secured that riding, adding if they want to hold on to power in the next election, ``the Liberal future is in Ontario.''
