A 72-year-old Waterloo man had hoped to complete a 24-hour swim across Lake Ontario last night, but had to stop when he encountered strong currents off the Toronto Islands.
Tom Bartlett entered the waters off Niagara-on-the-Lake Monday night hoping to become the oldest person to complete the crossing.
This is the second time mother nature has gotten in his way, an attempt two years ago on his 70th birthday also ended in disappointment when bad weather prevented him from entering the lake.
Barlett says he has always wanted to swim the lake like his hero, Marilyn Bel,l who became the first person to accomplish the feat in 1954 at the age of 16.
