Niagara Regional Police have launched a sudden death investigation after a tragic death in Welland.
Last night around 6:45 p.m. police, EMS, and members of the Welland Fire and Emergency Services responded to a call of a 5 month old boy in medical distress.
The boy was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Officers remain on scene in the area of King Street and Albert Street pending the outcome of the investigation.
NRP Constable Phil Gavin says there are homicide detectives on scene but that doesn't mean at this point it is being investigated as one, "In deaths of persons under 5 years of age our homicide unit will take part in it but that's out of protocol. So, the name can be misleading in this case but it is being investigated as a sudden death at this point."
A post mortem will be conducted later today.
