There's an effort underway to cut down on the amount of geese calling the Welland Recreational Canal home.
Officials have been hired by the city to try to deter the geese from nesting in the popular area of the International Flatwater Centre.
Michael von Kaitz of Wildlife Management Group says they are using various strategies to control the amount of geese ranging from playing gull distress calls, to letting dogs chase them into the water.
He estimates there are 100 geese in the area.
The city has budgeted just over $15,000 to clean the docks and pay for wildlife control.
Geese eat a large amount of grass and are quite messy as they poop at least one kilogram a day.
Some geese can also become aggressive if they are protecting their young.
Canada Geese are a protected species under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act which bans lethal control efforts without the proper federal, state, and (if needed) local permits.
