Niagara-on-the-Lake will be closing Queen Street between King and Victoria streets beginning on July 1st, but this is not to allow patio extensions like other Niagara municipalities have done.
N-O-T-L is doing it to support physical distancing measures for those visiting the Heritage District.
It's a four month pilot project that will take place only on weekends and statutory holidays.
The move means there will be a loss to parking revenues in the town, and as a result town council approved a $1.50/hr increase to parking rates for the duration of the program to help offset revenue losses.
In Niagara Falls the city agreed to close a portion of Centre Street to allow business patios to expand onto the sidewalk, and in St. Catharines a similar closure is already taking place on St. Paul street.
